Parking: Impact(s) of Disruptive Technologies?

Hi List

I'm looking at the future of parking and the possible impacts (positive and negative) of disruptive technologies on the sector.

Has anybody looked into this, or come across any interesting research articles/papers?

Thanks in advance.

Rob

Hello, Rob!

We just have this paper about how to transition curb parking away to other uses, assuming SAVs become popular for central destinations: http://www.caee.utexas.edu/prof/kockelman/public_html/TRB17ReusingCurbPa... (published as a chapter in this free online AV-centered book: http://www.caee.utexas.edu/prof/kockelman/public_html/CAV_Book2018.pdf).

We also have a new paper involving no-idling of SAVs on the busiest blocks of the Minneapolis-St Paul region (with service by SAVs across all 9 counties). We create special parking lots for those SAVs, which costs them some time to access and exit. I'm not sure our results are yet in the paper (at http://www.caee.utexas.edu/prof/kockelman/public_html/TRB20SAVsforMSP.PDF), but authors Haonan & Murthy will get the final version onto the website soon. (Haonan's thesis goes into this, but isn't online yet. Please email me for a pdf of that.)

Best wishes to you,
Kara

Really appreciated, thanks Kara. On a separate note, have you heard of or used the Cass Freight Index? Folks tell me it is a reliable indicator of freight activity in the US. Is that your understanding?

Many thanks,

Rob

Apologies, List. Meant to reply directly to Kara.

But if anyone does have experience of this US Freight Index I'd be very interested to hear your views (good and bad).

Many thanks,

Rob

Hi Rob,

I'm sharing two papers related to parking/emerging modes:

- The impact of ride-hailing on parking (and viceversa):
https://www.jtlu.org/index.php/jtlu/article/view/1392
- Parking at airports: https://www.nrel.gov/docs/fy18osti/71036.pdf

We also have a couple of papers under review related to the curb (not just
parking). Let me know if interested and I can share directly with you.

Best,
Alejandro
