Choice Surveys vs. Household Travel Surveys

I am wondering what the wisdom is out there in regards to using a choice survey to specifiy a mode choice model instead of a household travel survey? This would consist of mailing random individuals a set of choice surveys where they choose from a set of hypothetical options. They would also be asked to provide basic household information that could also be used in the model formation. In my opinion, this might be cheaper alternative the household travel surveys, additionally, having information regarding the choices a person wouldn't choose, could help the predictive power of a logit model.
