Two practitioners will discuss a particular modeling aspect of their DTA project. These topics could include initial model preparation, data collection, modeling validation and calibration, computation time, modeling outputs and post-processing, communication and feedback from project sponsors, etc. These discussions are aimed at documenting lessons learned from these projects for future model use and model improvements.

Jim Hicks, PB Americas
Jim Hicks is a senior travel modeler for Parsons Brinckerhoff, in his 13th year with the firm. Jim received a Ph.D. in Civil Engineering from the University of Illinois at Chicago. Jim chairs the TRB Network Models in Practice Subcommittee of the Network Modeling Committee.
Mr. Hicks will discuss demand calibration – focusing on the process of adjusting demand so that DTA assigned volumes match observed count data. We will talk about the process that was used and show results that were obtained.
Natarajan "Jana" Janarthanan, Fehr & Peers
Ming-Bang Shyu, Fehr & Peers
Natarajan “Jana” Janarthanan received his Ph. D from the University of Washington, Seattle and has more than 25 years of experience in travel demand forecasting, traffic engineering, corridor analysis, and multi-modal transportation planning. Jana has assisted many clients in the Puget Sound Region with travel demand models and forecasts and traffic engineering needs. He is currently leading the Fehr & Peers team in the areas of travel demand modeling and DTA modeling and applications.
Ming-Bang Shyu is a senior transportation engineer for Fehr and Peers with 10 years of experience. Ming received his Ph.D. from Penn State University and Masters from University of Salford, Manchester, UK. Ming’s experience include development and maintenance of travel demand models; traffic simulation models; Accident analysis, HOV and transit analyses.
They will discuss their experience using a DTA model for Thurston Regional Planning Council’s (TRPC) Smart Corridor Project. The presentation will focus briefly on an overview of the project and discuss the model development. They will talk about general approaches of DTA model validation and calibration, our experiences and validation results. And they will present some DTA applications, such as incident analysis, Transit system priority (TSP) and emission calculations.
