Evaluating Accessibility Benefit - VDOT Experience

The Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) utilizes a Smart Scale process for comparing and prioritizing competing highway, transit, and non-motorized improvement projects. Part of this Smart Scale procedure evaluates and scores projects based on accessibility improvements to employment and Points of Interests. This webinar details VDOT's development and application of an Accessibility Toolkit to support Smart Scale process and other projects with need of evaluating accessibility benefit. The presenters will discuss the tool development and application and the issues encountered during application.

Presenters

Ying (Winnie) Xiong is a system data analyst in the Transportation Mobility and Planning Division. She primarily works on Accessibility analysis for different projects and visualization of travel, traffic, and travel demand model datasets. She is also responsible for integrating data from various sources and providing GIS outputs. She has expertise in fields of Data Mining, Data Management as well as Visualization. She received her Master of Science in Data Science from University of Virginia.

Jim Lam is the Director of Transportation Applications and Support at Caliper Corporation. Mr. Lam specializes in developing travel demand models in TransCAD and he has extensive experience in modeling transit systems. Mr. Lam leads TransCAD model development projects and directs the TransCAD training and support program. Mr. Lam has over 28 years of experience in the transportation industry. Mr. Lam has a Bachelor of Applied Science in Civil Engineering from the University of Toronto and a Master of Science in Transportation from MIT.
