DESCRIPTION:

The Montgomery County Planning Department is currently seeking to fill a transportation planning support position within the Functional Planning and Policy Division. This unit works in support of County-wide growth management studies and area master plan/sector plan updates. The Senior Transportation Planner/Modeler position will serve under the direction of a Planning Supervisor or Planner Coordinator and will focus on a variety of duties, including:

* Developing or checking data used by the regional travel demand model, including transportation networks and land use data.
* Analysis of key transportation-related data sets, such as the household travel survey, on-board transit surveys or INRIX travel speed data.
* Running and updating the regional travel model.
* Supporting estimation, calibration, and validation activities associated with the regional travel model.
* Writing technical memoranda and reports.
* Supporting data requests from outside parties for the regional travel demand model and/or its inputs.
Ideal Candidate

* Experience with travel demand forecasting software, such as Cube Voyager.
* Computer programming experience focused on task automation.
* Knowledge of database management systems (DBMSs) and version control software.
* Familiarity with activity-based transportation models (although the Department currently uses a trip-based model).
* Ability to synthesize large amounts of data & information for succinct communication with laypersons.
* Experience maintaining multiple versions of transportation forecasting networks simultaneously.
* Ability to work cooperatively in a team environment.
* Strong spatial, analytical and problem-solving skills with experience using GIS software, such as ArcGIS.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Master's degree in planning, architecture, parks, engineering, environmental science, or equivalent disciplines related to job function and one year of progressively responsible professional level planning experience; OR an equivalent combination of education and experience.
