This two hour webinar will provide an introductory overview of the traditional four-step planning process, covering basic principles of trip generation, trip distribution, mode choice and traffic assignment. This session will also discuss typical data resources and their use in the development and application of travel models. Travel forecasting methods developed in Atlanta will be used as a case-study example to illustrate the key characteristics of both traditional trip-based and activity-based models.

Eric Pihl, Federal Highway Administration
Eric began his career with the Atlanta regional commission where he supported the development and application of regional travel models for long range transportation and air quality planning. Following a short stint with the private sector, Eric joined the US Environmental Protection Agency where he directed research that explored the range of sensitivities of conventional 4-step models to transportation system and land use changes. Later with the Federal Transit Administration he provided technical assistance to transit agencies on travel forecasting methods for major transit investment planning and project development. Eric is currently a member of the FHWA Resource Center Planning team, where he provides training and technical assistance on travel forecasting, traffic operations, and freight analysis methods to state and local agencies. Eric holds an MS in transportation engineering and a Master of City Planning from Georgia Tech.
Guy Rousseau, Atlanta Regional Commission
Guy Rousseau is the Modeling Manager for the Atlanta Regional Commission (ARC), the MPO for Atlanta, Georgia, which he joined in 1998. He is responsible for model development actvities for the 4-step trip-based model, the activity-based model and the population synthesizer, for modeling the impact of Regional Transportation Plans and Transportation Improvement Programs, coordinating the travel model with the land use model, providing model results for air quality emissions for conformity and attainment of clean air goals, and obtaining data for the modeling process through household travel surveys, transit on-board surveys and other studies. Before coming to ARC, he was the Principal Traffic Engineer for the City of Atlanta Department of Public Works, with responsibilities for travel modeling and traffic simulation. Mr. Rousseau has also been a transportation modeler for the MPOs in Dayton, Ohio, and Tulsa, Oklahoma, and for Jefferson Parish, Louisiana. He is a member of the TRB Committees on Transportation Planning Applications, Metadata, and Travel Survey Methods. He is the Co-Chair of the TRB Household Travel Survey Sub-Committee and the Chair of NCHRP 08-79. He is a Committee Member of the NAS & TRB Synthesis Study on the Determination of the State of the Practice in Travel Forecasting (Special Report 288), as well as SHRP 2 C-10, NCHRP 20-05/40-06, and the CTPP Oversight Board . He has participated in Model Peer Reviews of metropolitan travel forecasting for the North Carolina DOT, the Utah DOT, and for Memphis, San Diego, St. Louis, Sacramento, Austin, Portland (OR) and Knoxville MPOs. He holds an MSCE Degree from Laval University (Quebec City) and a BSCE Degree from the University of Montreal.
