Lead Model Developer BOSTON

The Central Transportation Planning Staff (CTPS) of the Boston Region Metropolitan Planning Organization (MPO) seeks an experienced software developer to design, develop, and maintain tools that provide innovative insights for transportation planning in the Boston region. The MPO is developing a travel demand model strategic plan that will define the suite of new tools to be developed, adopted, and maintained, and support existing tools and application needs. The Lead Developer will provide input and spearhead the implementation of the plan. The Lead Developer will join a team of modelers active in the development of a new regionwide travel demand model. The Lead Developer will shape the next generation of tools and demonstrate best practices in software development to the team. 

Responsibilities

● Lead the implementation of the next-generation travel demand model.

● Work with transportation modelers to understand the formulations and use cases and translate those into efficient, flexible scripts with error handling, testability, and user-centered features.

● Work collaboratively to advance the state of the practice for transportation tools at the agency.

● Mentor junior staff through design and code reviews, providing examples of best practices and organizing work to develop the team’s skills.

● Develop supporting utilities in TransCAD, R, Python, and other platforms.

● Give input to work plans and develop level-of-effort estimates.

Qualifications

While the following sections describe required and desirable qualifications, CTPS is open to candidates who believe that their particular experience and skills fulfill the requirements. 

Required

● Bachelor’s degree in computer science, data analytics, data science or related field and 7+ years of experience across the required skills or comparable 

● Demonstrated ability to think logically and algorithmically in clear, cogent software design and well-documented code in one or more programming languages

● Demonstrated ability to develop software as part of (including as the leader of) a team of other developers with varying sets of development skill and experience

● Experience designing, developing, deploying, documenting, and maintaining production-level code, and managing substantial (10s GB) amounts of data

● Experience working with data in various formats (e.g., CSV, JSON, HDF5, etc.)

● Ease with version control software and workflows

● Demonstrated ability to rapidly learn new tools and technologies, such as new scripting languages, analytics platforms, and more

● Ease with data management, procedure development, and data visualization in either R or Python (preferably both); understanding of relational databases

Preferred

● A desire to help build an equitable, sustainable, and resilient transportation system for the Boston region

● A wonderful sense of humor and approachable nature

● Experience developing in Caliper’s GISDK

● Familiarity with GIS and experience working with and visualizing spatial data

● Effective work prioritization, delegation, and planning skills

● Excellent problem solving and analytical skills

● Experience developing in JavaScript

● Familiarity with no-SQL databases

● Basic understanding of econometrics and demand modeling

Additional Information

This a full-time position with a starting salary range of $96,000–$102,000 annually, contingent upon qualifications and experience. The preferred location is Boston; however, this position may be fully remote for candidates with exceptional qualifications.
