Low Cost Traffic Counters?

Hi

We are considering the establishment of a number of permanent traffic counting stations in the US and wondered if anyone has recently reviewed the technology available? The equipment needs to be accurate and reliable (low/no maintenance). And relatively inexpensive as we have a number of locations to cover.

Any thoughts or pointers anyone?

Many thanks,

Rob

Hi Rob,

A lot depends on the type of data being collected.  And the complexity of the locations being monitored.  If you provide a few more details it would help in responding to your questions.

A resource for traffic data nationally is the Travel Monitoring Analysis System (TMAS) operated by FHWA.  All 50 states submit permanent traffic count data to them.  There are about 4500 monitoring stations in their database.  If your data needs are more general in nature, rather than collecting data at specific locations, they are a great resource.  Here is a link to their staff directory.  I suggest you contact Tianjia Tang if interested.
