MPO Transportation Modeling Engineer

The Capital Area Metropolitan Planning Organization (CAMPO) is based in Raleigh, North Carolina and serves as the regional transportation planning organization for all of Wake County and portions of four surrounding counties.  CAMPO has been housed within the City of Raleigh since its creation in 1968.   The City of Raleigh provides a comprehensive benefits package including medical, dental, life, retirement plans and 401(k) plan.

CAMPO is seeking a highly motivated and experienced transportation modeler to join our team.  This position is responsible for conducting transportation modeling and analysis tasks in support of short and long-range transportation studies, developing MPO performance measures, assisting with travel forecasting, traffic and transit analysis, and other regional planning efforts.  CAMPO modeling engineers work in coordination with other regional partners to develop and maintain the Triangle Regional Model (TRM), prepare socio-economic data, travel surveys, and other regional modeling tasks.

The anticipated hiring range is $51,822 to $80,000 annually

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Performing transportation modeling and analysis for Capital Area MPO short and long-range transportation plans and special studies
  • Responsible for making modifications to and producing output using the Triangle Regional Model (TRM)
  • Representing CAMPO on the TRM technical team and completing assigned tasks through the TRM annual work program
  • Responsible for coordinating regional air quality conformity analysis reporting activities
  • Developing performance measures for the MPO and assisting other staff with transportation analysis, travel forecasting, traffic and transit analysis, and other regional planning efforts
  • Researching and preparing technical reports and plans on complex issues including roadway capacity analysis, socio-economic data analysis, travel surveys and performance metrics
  • Other duties as assigned

Desired knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Knowledge of transportation modeling practices, air quality planning and transportation conformity process, knowledge of FHWA and FTA requirements as related to MPO planning activities 
  • Expertise in TransCAD, ArcGIS, Transmodeler, Micro-station, MOVES, and VISSIM preferred along with expertise in Microsoft Office, GISDK, VB and Python programming languages
  • Must possess strong critical thinking and problem-solving skills  
  • Considerable knowledge of the principles and practices of urban and regional transportation planning, and of federal and state transportation planning policy and requirements

Typical Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree in transportation engineering or a closely related field
  • 5 years of relevant modeling experience
  • Registration as an Engineering Intern by State of North Carolina, or the ability to qualify for such registration preferred
  • PE certification and/or AICP highly desired
  • A valid Class C NC Driver’s License is required
