The Montgomery County Planning Department is currently seeking to fill a transportation planning support position within the Functional Planning and Policy Division. This unit works in support of Countywide growth management studies and area master plan/sector plan updates. The Senior Transportation Planner position will serve under the direction of a Planning Supervisor or Planner Coordinator and will focus on a variety of duties, including:

  • Developing, checking and/or managing data used in support of the application of the regional travel demand model, including transportation networks and land use data using GIS tools.
  • Analysis of key transportation-related data sets, such as the household travel survey, on-board transit surveys or INRIX travel speed data.
  • Running and updating the regional travel model, with guidance.
  • Supporting estimation, calibration, and validation activities associated with the regional travel model.
  • Writing technical memoranda and reports.
  • Supporting data requests from outside parties for the regional travel demand model and/or its inputs.

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor's degree in transportation engineering, transportation planning, urban planning, or a related field or a minimum of two years of applicable transportation-related technical experience.

Ideal Candidate

  • Ability to work cooperatively in a team environment.
  • Strong spatial analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Experience with GIS software, such as ArcGIS.
  • Solid verbal and written communications skills.
  • Familiarity with the traditional four-step urban transportation forecasting model process and theory.
  • Interest in regional planning and travel demand modeling.
  • Experience with travel demand forecasting software, such as Cube Voyager.
  • Experience maintaining and updating multiple versions of transportation forecasting model networks simultaneously.
  • Ability to synthesize large amounts of data & information for succinct communication with laypersons.
