Description
The Atlanta Regional Commission (ARC) travel demand model is designed to, at a minimum, represent the state-of-the-practice in travel demand modeling. The ARC strategic travel demand model enhancement program has guided all modifications to the model. As a result, all elements of the model are designed to support all technical and policy decisions that are required in developing a comprehensive, multimodal transportation plan and program. Model improvements have generally been incremental approaches designed to produce a model that successfully addresses all federal planning and air quality requirements and sufficiently represents all transportation modes in the Atlanta region. This webinar addresses the 4-step trip-based travel demand model estimated for the Atlanta region, consisting of a series of sub-models which estimate travel patterns throughout the region and use these travel patterns to estimate the travel on the highway and transit transportation links in the region. The webinar will also cover the main data sources used for the estimation and calibration of the Atlanta regional travel demand model.

The North Central Texas Council of Governments (NCTCOG) has been conducting roadway data collection, transit surveys, and updating the regional 4-step travel model during the last 2 years. In this presentation, we will share our experience about the type of the data collected, points of strength and weakness we suspected in the data, how the data are used in improvement of the model, and some of the interim calibration and validation results.

Presenters
Guy Rousseau, Atlanta Regional Commission
Guy Rousseau is the Modeling Manager for the Atlanta Regional Commission (ARC), the MPO for Atlanta, Georgia, which he joined in 1998. He is responsible for model development actvities for the 4-step trip-based model, the activity-based model and the population synthesizer, for modeling the impact of Regional Transportation Plans and Transportation Improvement Programs, coordinating the travel model with the land use model, providing model results for air quality emissions for conformity and attainment of clean air goals, and obtaining data for the modeling process through household travel surveys, transit on-board surveys and other studies. Before coming to ARC, he was the Principal Traffic Engineer for the City of Atlanta Department of Public Works, with responsibilities for travel modeling and traffic simulation. Mr. Rousseau has also been a transportation modeler for the MPOs in Dayton, Ohio, and Tulsa, Oklahoma, and for Jefferson Parish, Louisiana. He is a member of the TRB Committees on Transportation Planning Applications, Metadata, and Travel Survey Methods. He is the Co-Chair of the TRB Household Travel Survey Sub-Committee and the Chair of NCHRP 08-79. He is a Committee Member of the NAS & TRB Synthesis Study on the Determination of the State of the Practice in Travel Forecasting (Special Report 288), as well as SHRP 2 C-10, NCHRP 20-05/40-06, and the CTPP Oversight Board . He has participated in Model Peer Reviews of metropolitan travel forecasting for the North Carolina DOT, the Utah DOT, and for Memphis, San Diego, St. Louis, Sacramento, Austin, Portland (OR) and Knoxville MPOs. He holds an MSCE Degree from Laval University (Quebec City) and a BSCE Degree from the University of Montreal.
Arash Mirzaei, Kathy Yu and Behruz Paschai, North Central Texas Council of Governments
Arash holds master degrees in both civil engineering and computer science. Kathy holds master degree in civil engineering. Behruz has a PhD degree in civil engineering. Arash is the manager of the Regional Travel Model and Data Management Group. His group carries a wide range of skills from web/database programming to statistical analysis and model development. There are 3 persons in data section and 5 persons in model section. The function of the group includes data collection, management of data, creation of data products such as databases and web sites, model development, GIS programming, supporting application projects for air quality, alternative analysis, NEPA, New Starts, and Toll analyses.
