TRB 2017 Transportation Analytics Contest

Sponsoring Committees:

? Effects of Information and Communication Technologies on Travel Choices (ADB20)

? Traveler Behavior and Values (ADB10)

? Transportation Demand Forecasting (ADB40)

? Transportation Statistics (ABJ80)

Data Sponsor

? AirSage (www.airsage.com)

A group of TRB committees focused on travel demand forecasting in collaboration with AirSage are pleased to provide researchers a unique opportunity to analyze multi-day travel demand in the form of origin-destination matrices gleaned from wireless signaling (cell phone) data. The contest organizers invite short papers and supporting documents summarizing modeling or visualizations performed using the data.

Data Overview:

The data are in the form of origin-destination matrices for 30 consecutive days (April 2014) for the Orlando metropolitan region in Florida, USA. For each day, origin-destination information is available for each hourly period, multiple user classes, and multiple trip purposes. A shape file of the region is also provided so that the analyst may integrate the origin-destination data with other (e.g. land use) data to draw insights into the observed travel trends.

What Could You Do?

We welcome modeling and visualization studies addressing a variety of topics including but not limited to:

? Data completeness

? Spatial patterns

? Day-to-day variations

? Behaviors of different market segments

? External Trips

? Integration of OD data with other (e.g. land use) data

Eligibility:

? Researchers (faculty/students) affiliated with any educational institution from anywhere in the world can participate

Procedures and Timelines

? The data for the contest will be delivered to the contestants through their advisor/principal investigator as follows:

o Visit here to complete the online survey, agree to terms and conditions, and download the license agreement. If you are not able to access the survey from this document, you could copy and paste this link: https://goo.gl/zD6hFT in your browser to access the survey.

o Advisor/Principal investigator emails the signed license agreement along with a copy of the completed survey (student contestants having the same advisor/principal investigator could collectively submit one form for using the data for the entire group instead of individual survey/agreement).

o AirSage will verify the request, and will respond to the principal investigator with completed license agreement and link to download the data for use by the contestant(s).

? Review the data. Questions or clarifications about the data and the procedures should be submitted via e-mail to the contact persons by November 16th. We reserve the right to not respond to questions/clarifications received after this date.

? A document summarizing responses to all posted questions will be published (distributed via e-mails) by November 18th 2016.

? Analyze the data and submit your short paper (around 3000 words) and supporting documents by Friday, December 16, 2016 to the contact persons.

? 3-5 best papers will be identified by a committee of experts based on the type of problem addressed, innovations in methodology, results/contributions, and overall clarity of the short paper

? Authors of identified papers will be invited to present their work at TRB Committee / Sub-Committee Meetings in January 2017. We will explore other ways to disseminate the work of authors unable to travel to TRB.

What to Submit?

A short paper about 3000 words covering the following items

o A succinct description of the problem you are analyzing and the motivation for studying it (A literature review is NOT required)

o Describe the methodology adopted and identify the innovative aspects

o Present and discuss the results and highlight the contributions of the work

Optional Submissions (particularly for Visualization studies):

? A video of visualization of travel patterns

? A set of narrated slides with the visualizations

? Please do check with contact persons about alternate forms of submissions
