Visualization techniques can be used to improve data quality, improve accessibility to data including broadening the audience, and especially, to convey the data to policymakers and stakeholders. By improving data visualization you may be able to garner support for improving data quality or replacing old data. Our university partners are forging partnerships across disciplines including computer sciences, geography, and graphic arts, and are changing the way we look at data.

This webinar will highlight two areas:

Travel behavior data, with a focus on household travel and activity diaries, including the use of GPS and other location-based technologies; and,
Traffic monitoring and incident data from traffic volumes, vehicle classification, travel speed, combined with satellite imagery and fly-overs.

Catherine T. Lawson is the Director of the Master’s in Regional Planning Program and an Associate Professor in the Geography and Planning Department at the University at Albany, in Albany, New York. She received her Ph. D. in Urban Studies/Regional Science at Portland State University (PSU), Portland Oregon. Dr. Lawson is a member of the faculty of the Information Sciences Ph.D. Program and the Rockefeller Public Policy Program and currently chairs TRB’s Urban Transportation Data and Information Systems Committee (ABJ30).
Catherine Morency is an Assistant Professor at Ecole Polytechnique of Montreal in the Civil Engineering program. She is involved in various research project related to the modelling of individual travel behaviours, especially those related to alternative modes of transportation such as ridesharing, carsharing, active transportation or intermodality. As part of her research work, she has developed various visualisation tools aiming at analysing, modelling and disseminating transport phenomena using interactive spreadsheets, GIS and animation.
Christopher M. Monsere is an Assistant Professor of Civil and Environmental Engineering and is an affiliated faculty member of the School of Urban Studies & Planning (USP). Monsere received his Ph.D. in civil engineering at Iowa State University in 2001. Dr. Monsere’s primary research interests are in the areas of highway safety, freight transportation, operations, and intelligent transportation systems.
Michael L. Pack is the Director of the Center for Advanced Transportation Technology Laboratory at the University of Maryland in College Park. He has extensive experience in the areas of Intelligent Transportation Systems, transportation operations and incident management, data acquisition systems, database management systems, data visualization, graphical user interface design, process control, and video image processing. His laboratory is recognized around the country as an innovator for visualization and design work for the transportation industry. He has previously worked for the Oak Ridge National Laboratory’s Center for Transportation Analysis and the University of Virginia’s Smart Travel Laboratory.
